Eddie Howe illness latest as Newcastle No2 hopes 'he'll be back soon' (2025)

Howe was hospitalised on Friday night and will miss Sunday's visit of Manchester United

Jason Tindall hopes Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe will be back in the dugout soon after being admitted to hospital on Friday night.

Howe will miss Sunday's visit of Manchester United at St James' Park, with right-hand man Tindall and Graeme Jones taking charge of the team in his absence.

Carabao Cup-winning boss Howe took unwell after Monday's 3-0 win at Leicester City and wasn't involved in midweek training.

The 47-year-old stepped away from media duties on Friday morning as Tindall fielded questions from the press ahead of this weekend's Premier League showdown.

Howe was hospitalised on Friday night and remained overnight for ongoing tests. It's not yet known when the Englishman will return, but Tindall hopes the Magpies put on a show for their manager on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the game, he told Sky Sports: "Obviously, he's not been well this week, and he was taken to hospital on Friday evening. Everybody obviously wishes him the best and I'm sure he'll be back with us again soon."

Asked if Howe will have any input in the game, Tindall added: "I think when you've been ill all week, it's very difficult to have the kind of input that we would normally have. With the way we work, we know the expectations.

"We've got a fantastic group of players who know the expectations and demands that the manager and everybody else puts on them. So it's important they go out and deliver the performance that the manager will be proud of."

Newcastle released a statement on Friday night confirming Howe had been taken to hospital for tests and would miss the clash with the Red Devils.

A club statement read: "Eddie Howe will miss Newcastle United's Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday due to illness.

"The Magpies' head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days.

"Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.

"Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will follow in due course.

"Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team at St. James' Park on Sunday, supported by the club's first team staff."
